Free 7 Day Throw And Footwork
This blog will help you understand, not just great balance and body control in the pocket, but how to always have great balance and body control. It’s not only how can we get great exercises to help you being a better quarterback. It’s about how can we have great exercises to help you be a great overall athlete then apply those to being a better quarterback. staying in balance allows you to get the ball out on time. That is the focus of this throw program.
When it comes to balance and body control I like to test single leg RDL when I see a QB who struggles with balance. Standing on 1 straight leg, stretch down, touch, come back back up. As you are doing that, you really wanna feel how is your body able to control that movement through your feet. I’ll test both sides keeping your back extended, keeping your back leg reaching back with good posture/form. The technique doesn’t need to be perfect for you to understand that this is where your center balances, do the best you can. Like going through my drop back and being able to control it. It’s the same concept, you need to always be in balance.
If I’m going to do a lateral jump right, I’m gonna just jump to that side, land, then I’m gonna try to stabilize. In order for me to stabilize, I have to get to a balance point. Like doing that single leg R D L, we need to work both sides. I want to be able to land the best I can on the inside part of my foot in order to be balanced. Balance in your drop will allow you to throw on time. When you are in balance you can load/stride at any time. You don’t need to take extra steps to collect yourself, gain balance, then load into the throw.
Balance allows you to have better control of your knee and better control of my hip. When you are struggling with being able to have a good base, being able to shift off that back leg and even being able to go through a drop back with good control you lack feel for balance . The reason is because you don’t have a great understanding of where your center of mass and where your control is within your body. And I think those two exercises (side jump and single leg RDL) will help you understanding how to achieve balance. Just doing a jump, landing and stabilizing. Where does your body want to get to? Right? It’s ok if you shake right, if you’re stable.
When you get control of where that point is on your foot, that is the point you want to be. when you’re getting that wide base while you’re sitting in the pocket, when you’re doing footwork drills, try to control yourself, try to be able to move with short steps. Doing the R D L and doing all types of movements like trying to decelerate and cut or move side to side, the faster you can get yourself into that balance feeling position, the better. Now you’re going to be able to push off and be able to do that in the way that’s going to be the most effective for you. You need a better understanding of your own body to make it so you can perform at the highest level. If you don’t have great control and great understanding of how your body moves, it’s going to be harder for you to be able to play at a place where you’re going to be able to succeed as well.
If you don’t have a good understanding of where your center of mass is, where your balance is, how to control your hands, your wrist, your spine, your core, your hips, then your ability to transfer any type of athleticism that you have onto the field wont be as effective. Understand how to balance and be in control, those 2 drills are a good place to start. Be aware of your body. The better understanding you have of that, the more you’re gonna be able to transfer that into your live game. Single leg R D L, single leg balance, even standing on one leg and just rotating, exercises like that are gonna help you in being able to understand where balance is, and how to get to it. That’s gonna be the main point: where do I feel balance? When do I feel off balance? When you go one way, make sure you can feel what you feel when off balance. But then, where do I feel balance?
At what point of my foot does my body want to get to for balance? When you’re doing your drop back drills, when you’re in the pocket, when you’re trying to throw the football, make sure you’re getting to that place. That point is gonna be a main contributor to where you are able to generate the most amount of force. This should make a lot of sense to you guys.
